518: New York’s Capital Region Area Code, at a Glance

Albany, NY — The 518 area code serves New York’s Capital Region and much of the northeastern part of the state, covering Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, Plattsburgh, and towns throughout the Adirondacks. It’s one of New York’s original area codes, runs on Eastern Time, and most calls from it are legitimate — though the same scam patterns that hit every recognizable area code apply here too. Here’s the full picture.

The basics

518 covers a genuinely large footprint compared to most metro-focused area codes — it stretches from the Capital Region all the way north through the Adirondack Park to the Canadian border near Plattsburgh. That geographic range is unusual; most area codes in this series cover a single city and its suburbs, while 518 spans an entire multi-city region plus a large rural area.

Time zone: Eastern — EST (UTC-5) in winter, EDT (UTC-4) during daylight saving.

Is it a country code? No — a common mix-up, but 518 is strictly a U.S. area code. The country code for international dialing is +1.

What’s legitimate, and what to watch for

Albany’s economy runs heavily on state government, healthcare, and higher education (it’s home to several major colleges), all of which generate a steady volume of routine local calling — appointment confirmations, government office callbacks, campus communications. Most 518 calls are exactly that.

The exception, as with any recognizable area code, is neighbor spoofing — scammers displaying a local-looking number regardless of where they’re actually calling from. Fake bank verification requests, government impersonation calls, and delivery scams are the common versions. Urgency is the actual warning sign, not the area code itself.

If you’re a business texting 518 customers

A local number improves engagement across this region the same way it does anywhere — but compliant SMS takes more than picking the right area code. Before sending to any list, confirm: customers have explicitly opted in, every message includes an easy opt-out (a “reply STOP” line), your business is clearly identified in the message itself, customer data is stored securely, and messaging follows carrier guidelines to avoid getting filtered before it reaches anyone.

For companies on Salesforce, Message Blink builds this in natively — sending and receiving SMS and WhatsApp from a local 518 number, automated opt-in/opt-out tracking, and every conversation logged against the right Lead, Contact, or Case. That’s particularly useful for the sectors concentrated in this region: healthcare providers, colleges, and government contractors managing high volumes of routine customer or constituent communication. Plans start with a free 30-day trial (100 SMS credits), with paid tiers from $7 per user/month.
